Shaw River Buffalo Cheese ran Australia’s first herd of Milking Water Buffalo and manufactures a variety of premium quality cheeses and yoghurt from pure water buffalo milk. The business was started in 1995 by the Haldane family with the importation of specially selected milking buffalo from Italy and Bulgaria.
The herd was originally located at ‘Purrumbete Homestead’ near Camperdown, Victoria, and production of cheese under the Purrumbete label began in 1996.
In 1998 construction of a new cheese manufacturing plant on the banks of the ‘Shaw River’ in the small coastal hamlet of Yambuk, on the Great Ocean Road about 15 minutes west of Port Fairy was started.
The herd was moved to their new location in 2000 and the business name changed to ‘Shaw River Buffalo Cheese’.
In 2021 the factory and business was closed due to economic viability. The factory sat unused till Melbourne entrepreneur Ignatious and his wife Murali purchased the Factory and a parcel of land around the factory.
While not having the animals they decided that the business was to important to the community and needed to be revived.
Buffalo milk was acquired from a Buffalo milk producer in SA and production of buffalo milk cheese resumed in May 2025.
